So almost a month ago, I met up with Katherine and Megan at Cahoots Coffee Bar. We were all friends with one another, but had never hung out as a group. So during our first meeting my idea of having weekly assignments to help push us was thrown out on the table and it was more than well received! We immediately started thinking up assignments. They thought my first assignment should be a ink landscape and in my mind I was thinking, “Landscape.. no big deal.. Ink.. well that’s going to be rough.. I’ve never used it.” But then they threw out that I could only use the three ink colors I had just purchased!! Something I thought would already be difficult just got more difficult. So for my first attempt I went out to Afton State Park on the St. Croix River. I set up my easel and pulled out the inks and went to work.. I painted in the water first and felt rather happy with it.. then I realized that having only three colors was going to be rather difficult with a landscape. I had a teal like color, red, and black…. How do you make a landscape from that?! I tried.. and almost immediately decided I had failed at this attempt. I was so frustrated with the foreign medium and the opaque nature of the red ink.
Later that week Katherine dropped me off at Banning State Park and I did about a five or six mile hike. Along the way I stopped at a small waterfall and set up shop and began inking once more. I was more comfortable with the ink this time and the weather was just beautiful out. In the end I wasn’t terribly happy with how it turned out.. but it was definitely a step forward from the first attempt. Half the battle while painting was fending off ticks.. They were getting all over my pants.. so I had to keep beating them off. Stupid ticks.
